So, Rent is about $957/month for a decent place. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 9 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Downtown) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Francisco, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 47, moved here 10 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Eastside and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The school system situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**

I'm a teacher who relocated here from Baltimore about 2 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Strong job market in several industries
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are growing, gas is challenging.
