Moving to Pontiac for work -advice?

First post here. I work in construction and Crime rate is something to consider -Pontiac sits at 249.8 per 100K. It's a a small town city with about 11,483 people. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Charlotte about 1 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and weather.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Active local events and festivals
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Nightlife is limited

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are established, gas is decent.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Eastside. It's challenging for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Definitely worth checking out..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Eastside) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 5 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 12 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is tough.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

If you value job market, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely decent and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Sunset) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Maple Ridge area are average. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.

I've been here 1 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The East side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to San Francisco it's better than expected.

I've lived in Highland for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Close to major attractions
- The healthcare scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Far from beaches/mountains

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Happy to answer more specific questions..
