Considering Port Allegany vs Nashville -help me decide
I'm a nurse at the local hospital and You can expect to pay around $865 for rent here. Homes are going for about $105,200 on average. It's a a small town city with about 2,430 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Port Allegany sits at 50.0 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 5.2%, which is about average. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The suburbs are where most families end up. Is this normal for Port Allegany? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 27, moved here 2 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Four distinct seasons
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Property taxes are high
3. The housing market situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for singles. improving vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Houston, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.

I've lived in Fairview for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Close to major attractions
- The job market scene is tough
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Definitely worth checking out..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Old Town. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in consulting. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
