Been meaning to ask this. Been living here since 2016. The unemployment rate is 3.3%, which is pretty low. With a population of 220K, Port St. Lucie is a mid-size city. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Am I overthinking this?

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Dallas about 11 years ago. The main reasons were weather and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are established, gas is decent.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 8 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Eastside. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in retail. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Thai.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in tech. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Definitely worth checking out..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Internet is tough in most areas.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is job market. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from New York about 4 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Decent public transit for the size
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Property taxes are high
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is underrated.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it exceeded my expectations. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I'm a social worker who relocated here from Charlotte about 8 years ago. The main reasons were work and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Decent public transit for the size
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are reasonable, gas is tough.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Definitely worth checking out..

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 13 years here, that's my honest assessment.

As someone who grew up here, it's exactly what I was looking for. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much wild but now it's solid.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 28, moved here 12 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Maple Ridge and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Strong job market in several industries
2. Close to major attractions
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Can feel isolated
3. The school system situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Maple Ridge: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Sunset: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $50K-$130K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
