Not sure if this has been asked before, but With a population of 49,015, Portage is a smaller city. The median home value here is around $243,400, which is actually reasonable. Rent is about $1,120/month for a decent place. Household incomes average around $79,529 in Portage. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Any advice would be great. Thanks for reading. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

**What I love:**

2. Four distinct seasons

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Highland for 3 years. Moved from Houston for a fresh start. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
the quality of life is solid. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Highland schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Chain restaurants dominate. Far from beaches/mountains. And school system can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
