So, Born and raised here. Crime rate is something to consider -Porterville sits at 318.9 per 100K. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Is this normal for Porterville? It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Affordable housing options
- The cost of living scene is decent
The downsides:
- Bugs and humidity in summer
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 1 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Greenfield side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a social worker who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 5 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Affordable housing options
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are wild, gas is average.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 53, moved here 3 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in The Heights and Sunset, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Road conditions need improvement
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The food scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for retirees. tough vibes, walkable.
- Sunset: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Miami it's tough.

I've been here 3 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is challenging.
