Is Porterville still affordable?

Alright, I grew up here but left for a while. Median household income is $59,012, which feels about average for the area. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Would love some local perspective. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.

I've been here 11 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is better than expected.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've lived in Highland for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- The job market scene is solid

The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for singles. No regrets on my end..

I work in tech here and I have mixed feelings honestly. The job market for my field is better than expected. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Used to live on the Old Town side, now on the Downtown side. Completely different vibe. it's not perfect but it works for me.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 47, moved here 15 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Midtown and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Close to major attractions
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The traffic situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for retirees. average vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
