Is it worth buying in Portland?

First post here. The median home value here is around $452,600, which is pretty steep. Crime rate is something to consider -Portland sits at 242.3 per 100K. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Any advice would be great. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Downtown. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Hot take but I love the pace of life here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 3 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've lived in Eastside for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- The traffic scene is solid

The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 9 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is pretty good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Bought a house here in 2015 and the quality of life is solid. Property values have gone up a bit since then.
