Moving to Portland with kids — good idea?

OK so I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Poverty rate is 7.1%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 3.9%, which is pretty low. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Should I be concerned? It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Austin about 5 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Definitely worth checking out..
