Hi all, We're a young couple and Average temperature is around 54°F, so expect cold winters. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to. Am I wrong here? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in government. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've been in Oak Park for 2 years. Moved from Nashville for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is surprisingly good. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.
**Employment:**
marketing is strong here. manufacturing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I love the pace of life here. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are pretty good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Can feel isolated. Far from beaches/mountains. And food scene can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 14 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Riverside side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've lived in Fairview for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Atlanta, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of new development happening
- The housing market scene is average
The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Property taxes are high

Background: I'm a project manager, 41, moved here 11 years ago from Pittsburgh. I've lived in Springfield and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**

2. Bugs and humidity in summer
