Honest thoughts on life in Poughkeepsie

OK so Been living here since 2008. You can expect to pay around $1,370 for rent here. The median home value here is around $259,200, which seems about average. Crime rate is something to consider -Poughkeepsie sits at 772.5 per 100K. Poverty rate is 15.8%, which is higher than I expected. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Am I wrong here? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Dallas about 9 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are pricey, gas is challenging.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
