Job market in Poughkeepsie for tech?

Anyone else feel this way? We're a young couple and Homes are going for about $259,200 on average. With a population of 31,778, Poughkeepsie is a smaller city. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Am I wrong here?

Used to live on the North side, now on the Fairview side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Moved here from Minneapolis about 6 years ago. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Still getting used to weather but Good luck with whatever you decide..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I have mixed feelings honestly. Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Highland for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good airport with direct flights
- The safety scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Not a lot of cultural diversity

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for young professionals. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Austin about 15 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- Diverse dining options

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Far from beaches/mountains

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.

Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Hope this helps!.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Uptown for 12 years. Moved from New York for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
finance is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are manageable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is better than expected - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Uptown schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Urban sprawl is real. And school system can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 9/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Came here for weather and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The pet-friendliness is honestly decent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a writer, 55, moved here 3 years ago from Atlanta. I've lived in Eastside and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The housing market situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for families. average vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Atlanta, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $50K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Four distinct seasons
- The community vibe scene is excellent

The downsides:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. No regrets on my end..
