Unpopular opinion about Poughkeepsie

Alright, I'm a college student here and Household incomes average around $60,050 in Poughkeepsie. Rent is about $1,370/month for a decent place. With a population of 31,778, Poughkeepsie is a smaller city. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Strong sense of community
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Limited nightlife
- Sprawl everywhere
- High property taxes
- Mosquitoes and humidity
I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I work in retail here and it's not perfect but it works for me. The job market for my field is underrated. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it exceeded my expectations. Hope this helps!.
