Worst things about Poughkeepsie nobody talks about
First post here. My family moved here when I was a kid. Poverty rate is 15.8%, which is higher than I expected. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Thanks! Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cultural scene, then yeah this place is great. But if pet-friendliness matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely challenging and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is wild and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from LA, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Weather-wise, the summers are surprisingly good and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

I've lived in West for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. When I first moved here from Denver, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Active local events and festivals
- Close to major attractions
- The healthcare scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Feel free to reach out with questions..
