First post here. Been living here since 2012. The unemployment rate is 2.6%, which is pretty low. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely tough and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want food scene, then yeah this place is great. But if safety matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 1 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into running, this place is solid.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've lived in Sunset for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- The housing market scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Bugs and humidity in summer
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for young professionals. Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for a fresh start and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The food scene is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to Pittsburgh it's excellent.
