Why I chose Racine over bigger cities

So, Military spouse here. Average temperature is around 47--F, so expect cold winters. Homes are going for about $158,100 on average. The median home value here is around $158,100, which is actually reasonable. It's a a smaller city city with about 77,155 people. You can expect to pay around $983 for rent here. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The weather takes some getting used to.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Low crime in most areas
- Good schools
- Good airport connections

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Hot summers
- Limited nightlife
- Poor road conditions
What neighborhoods would you suggest? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely better than expected and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Midtown) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a teacher and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. The community is pretty good and there's always something going on.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in engineering you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is traffic. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 13 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.
