I'm retired and It's a a mid-size city city with about 471K people. With a population of 471K, Raleigh is a mid-size city. The median home value here is around $377,800, which seems about average. Median household income is $82,424, which feels pretty solid for the area. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What do you all think? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The city has invested a lot in new development. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from LA about 2 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are stable, gas is underrated.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in The Heights. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in retail. If you're in legal you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I'm a electrician and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. The community is solid and there's always something going on.

Used to live on the North side, now on the Oak Park side. Completely different vibe. it was the best decision I ever made.
