Hello, I'm single, late 40s, and Rent is about $2,286/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $694,400, which is pretty steep. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. What neighborhoods would you suggest? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Seattle about 4 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good airport with direct flights
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is underrated.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

As someone who grew up here, I have mixed feelings honestly. A lot has changed in the past few years though. weather used to be much manageable but now it's tough.

Hot take but it was the best decision I ever made. I know a lot of people disagree but after 3 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 3 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Maple Ridge side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Riverside. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in construction. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
