Is Rantoul still affordable?

First post here. Average temperature is around 52--F, so expect cold winters. With a population of 12,515, Rantoul is a small town. The unemployment rate is 2.1%, which is pretty low. It's a a small town city with about 12,515 people. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value housing market, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'm a nurse and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. The community is decent and there's always something going on.
