Hey everyone, Crime rate is something to consider -Raytown sits at 691.3 per 100K. You can expect to pay around $1,213 for rent here. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The weather takes some getting used to. Should I be concerned? The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The weather takes some getting used to. Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 10 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into biking, this place is average.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Old Town. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in finance. If you're in construction you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely average and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. No regrets on my end..

Bought a house here in 2017 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Bought a house here in 2024 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.
