Hi all, Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

We moved here with our family and the quality of life is solid. Schools in Downtown area are decent. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 11 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is walkability. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a contractor and I've found I love the pace of life here. The community is tough and there's always something going on.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Austin about 3 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good internet infrastructure
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are affordable, gas is excellent.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Public transit is average here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 12 years here, that's my honest assessment.
