Cost of living reality check -Redmond

Anyone else feel this way? I'm a 26-year-old chef and Rent is about $2,343/month for a decent place. Homes are going for about $1,091,700 on average. The unemployment rate is 3.0%, which is pretty low. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Any advice would be great. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus.

I've lived in Pine Hills for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

it's been a really good experience overall. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by walkability. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good internet infrastructure
- The school system scene is pretty good

The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Dating scene is rough

Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for remote workers. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cost of living, then yeah this place is great. But if weather matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from New York about 1 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Lots of new development happening
- Active local events and festivals

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited shopping options

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is decent.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a chef, 53, moved here 10 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Pine Hills and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Dating scene is rough
3. The pet-friendliness situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for young professionals. average vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
