My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is safety. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Riverside for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Lots of new development happening
- Affordable housing options
- The public transit scene is tough
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I work in legal here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is pretty good. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 12 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 8 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Fairview side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want cost of living, then yeah this place is great. But if healthcare matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value nightlife, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely solid and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (West) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Portland and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Springfield. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Korean.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

If you value job market, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely tough and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Westside) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. outdoor recreation used to be much developing but now it's solid.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Internet is improving in most areas.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is school system. I love the pace of life here. Worth doing your research before committing.
