I'm single, late 30s, and It's a a small town city with about 9,247 people. Homes are going for about $202,600 on average. Crime rate is something to consider -Rensselaer sits at 146.2 per 100K. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Does this match your experience? The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely tough and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Springfield) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 1 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Highland. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in retail. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Asian.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it was the best decision I ever made.
