Not sure if this has been asked before, but It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Meadowbrook. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in finance. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like sushi.
Definitely worth checking out..

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a HR manager, 35, moved here 4 years ago from Austin. I've lived in Lakewood and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The pet-friendliness situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Lakewood: Great for families. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Austin, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $50K-$100K here.

I've lived in Sunset for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Lots of new development happening
- The weather scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Property taxes are high
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for retirees. Hope this helps!.
