Hi all, I relocated for work and It's a a smaller city city with about 63,542 people. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. What are your go-to spots? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 5 years and it exceeded my expectations. The thing nobody mentions is traffic. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Midtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been in Oak Park for 10 years. Moved from Charlotte for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.
**Employment:**
real estate is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's not perfect but it works for me. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Oak Park schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Property taxes are high. And safety can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**

Background: I'm a writer, 28, moved here 15 years ago from Houston. I've lived in Sunset and Eastside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The food scene situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Maple Ridge. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally solid. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like BBQ.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Tampa about 2 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is challenging.
