Job market in Richmond for tech?

Hey, I'm retired and The unemployment rate is 4.1%, which is about average. Crime rate is something to consider — Richmond sits at 462.9 per 100K. The median home value here is around $328,100, which seems about average. Median household income is $62,671, which feels about average for the area. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely challenging and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Springfield) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely underrated and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Old Town) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.

We moved here with our family and I have mixed feelings honestly. Schools in Maple Ridge area are pretty good. Kids love it here.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in West. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in consulting. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Hope this helps!.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 6 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by healthcare. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Lots of new development happening
- The job market scene is solid

The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited entertainment options

Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for remote workers. Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a HR manager, 28, moved here 7 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Highland and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Close to major attractions
2. Good airport with direct flights
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Homeless population growing downtown
3. The outdoor recreation situation is pricey and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Highland: Great for remote workers. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
