We moved here with our family and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Schools in Sunset area are tough. Kids love it here.

I've lived in South for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
- The pet-friendliness scene is tough
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Feel free to reach out with questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 2 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Lakewood side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2022 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Westside for 1 years. Moved from New York for retirement. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
government is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Westside schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Dating scene is rough. And cost of living can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Austin about 1 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Four distinct seasons
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are pricey, gas is underrated.
Socially, it's improved dramatically in recent years. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 6 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into running, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Fairview. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in government. If you're in retail you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to Boston it's decent.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely tough and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Midtown) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been here 14 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is solid.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it's been a really good experience overall. The job market is honestly pretty good and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
