OK so We have two kids and Homes are going for about $666,400 on average. The weather takes some getting used to. Property taxes are high but you get good services. What neighborhoods would you suggest? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely hit or miss and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Old Town) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Came here for work and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The school system is honestly improving and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Westside. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in legal. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Definitely worth checking out..

Bought a house here in 2024 and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
