Moving from Las Vegas to Roanoke next month

First post here. Rent is about $589/month for a decent place. Does this match your experience? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Weather-wise, the summers are hit or miss and winters are competitive. You get used to it after the first year.

I've been living here for 2 years and I'd say I have mixed feelings honestly. The healthcare is underrated compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is weather. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from San Francisco about 14 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Lots of new development happening
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Limited entertainment options

Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is better than expected.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Compared to Baltimore it's tough.
