What to expect moving to Roanoke?

Random thought, Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. Poverty rate is 1.8%, which is pretty low. With a population of 9,947, Roanoke is a small town. The unemployment rate is 3.1%, which is pretty low. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Has anyone dealt with this? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in Pine Hills area are average. Kids love it here.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in The Heights for 8 years. Moved from Seattle for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. engineering is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it was the best decision I ever made. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are decent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Road conditions need improvement. Far from beaches/mountains. And dating scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 7/10. Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.

I've been here 4 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Meadowbrook side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

Came here for work and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The community vibe is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
