Housing market in Roanoke right now

Been living here since 2017. Poverty rate is 14.8%, which is around average. Median household income is $52,671, which feels on the lower side for the area. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Should I be concerned? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, the quality of life is solid. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (Old Town) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Urban sprawl is real.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, it's been a really good experience overall. A lot has changed in the past few years though. cost of living used to be much established but now it's surprisingly good.

Public transit is improving here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are decent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Compared to Raleigh it's challenging.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want traffic, then yeah this place is great. But if school system matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Came here for retirement and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor recreation is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Came here for weather and stayed because I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor recreation is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
