Why I chose Robstown over bigger cities

Random thought, I'm a college student here and The median home value here is around $89,500, which is actually reasonable. Rent is about $920/month for a decent place. You can expect to pay around $920 for rent here. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Close to nature
- Low taxes
- Strong sense of community
- Active local events

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Rising rent prices
- Limited nightlife
- Poor road conditions
- Chain restaurants dominate
Am I wrong here? The weather takes some getting used to. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Lakewood. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in education you might struggle.

People: Generally decent. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 54, moved here 15 years ago from Dallas. I've lived in Greenfield and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Low crime in most neighborhoods
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The school system situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Greenfield: Great for singles. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Dallas, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$140K here.

**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are solid, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
