The good and bad of living in Rochester

Hi all, I've been here for 18 years and You can expect to pay around $1,201 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 1.7%, which is pretty low. Household incomes average around $104,920 in Rochester. Poverty rate is 2.2%, which is pretty low. Homes are going for about $450,800 on average. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Friendly people
- Good schools
- Plenty of shopping options
- Active local events

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Rising rent prices
- Lack of diversity
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Chain restaurants dominate
Thanks in advance! Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. The city has invested a lot in new development. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in The Heights. It's decent for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in retail. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's surprisingly good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in legal. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely better than expected and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Fairview) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
