Couple moving to Rochester from out of state

Military spouse here. Homes are going for about $287,500 on average. With a population of 122K, Rochester is a mid-size city. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Would love some local perspective. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a contractor who relocated here from Tampa about 12 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and school.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Strong job market in several industries
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are pricey, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Feel free to reach out with questions..
