Life in Rochester as a young professional

Moved here 13 years ago for work. Rochester has a small but active network for young professionals. Income levels are solid here — median is around $87,767. Rent runs about $1,316/month for a typical apartment. The social scene is hit or miss depending on the area. Would I recommend it? Depends on what you value..

Don't sleep on Old Town. It's up and coming and still affordable.

Been here 20 years. The city has changed a lot but overall for the better.

For families, I'd recommend looking at Midtown. Schools are rated well and it's quiet.

If you can afford it, University District is the best place to live. Period.

Respectfully disagree about the cost of living assessment. In my experience, it really depends on your lifestyle.

Coming from LA, the cost of living difference is noticeable. Groceries and gas are about the same.

Totally agree with this. I've been here 14 years and my experience is very similar.

Great post! One thing I'd mention is the west side tends to be more affordable. Makes a big difference.

I've lived in Lakewood for 11 years and it's decent, has its pros and cons.

Rent tip: look for places in January-February. Prices drop and there's more availability.

Weather is the biggest factor for us. Four seasons are nice, not too extreme either way.

I've lived in Eastside for 9 years and it's a hidden gem honestly.

As someone who moved here from San Francisco, I can confirm most of this. The job opportunities surprised me the most.

Good summary. I'd rate it higher personally — maybe 8/10.
