Rochester is underrated, change my mind

Hi all, Average temperature is around 49°F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Anyone in a similar situation? Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Uptown for 9 years. Moved from Tampa for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is improving - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Uptown schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Not very walkable outside downtown. And safety can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 9/10. No regrets on my end.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Came here for retirement and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The dating scene is honestly decent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is housing market. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Riverside. It's tough for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in government. If you're in tech you might struggle.

People: Generally average. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Indian.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

Hot take but I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.
