Hey everyone, I'm a remote worker and Household incomes average around $79,388 in Rochester. Crime rate is something to consider -Rochester sits at 298.2 per 100K. With a population of 32,866, Rochester is a smaller city. Homes are going for about $262,600 on average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. TIA! Property taxes are high but you get good services. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I've lived in Pine Hills for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by community vibe. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The pet-friendliness scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Property taxes are high
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for retirees. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (East) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Road conditions need improvement.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are average, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
