Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 10 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Springfield for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The nightlife scene is hit or miss
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for couples. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a contractor who relocated here from Phoenix about 1 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good internet infrastructure
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Limited shopping options
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it solid compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are wild, gas is better than expected.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
