Been meaning to ask this. Born and raised here. Household incomes average around $52,927 in Rocky Mount. With a population of 54,175, Rocky Mount is a smaller city. Average temperature is around 60--F, so the weather is moderate. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Has anyone dealt with this? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

I work in finance here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is pretty good. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 14 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into mountain biking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. I genuinely enjoy living here. Worth doing your research before committing.

I've been here 10 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from Dallas and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Eastside. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

Bought a house here in 2017 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a HR manager, 48, moved here 15 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Oak Park and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Not a lot of cultural diversity
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The cultural scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Oak Park: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
