What surprised you most about Rocky Mount?

Been meaning to ask this. It's a a smaller city city with about 54,175 people. Rent is about $919/month for a decent place. Crime rate is something to consider -Rocky Mount sits at 787.7 per 100K. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods.

Pros:
- Great weather
- Growing food scene
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Not very walkable
- Limited dining options
Thoughts? Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The suburbs are where most families end up. The suburbs are where most families end up. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Highland. It's hit or miss for what you get.

Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in finance. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Weather-wise, the summers are excellent and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.
