Hey, Household incomes average around $42,518 in Rolla. Poverty rate is 10.6%, which is around average. The unemployment rate is 2.7%, which is pretty low. The median home value here is around $177,400, which is actually reasonable. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Let me know your thoughts. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Phoenix and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Downtown. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in government. If you're in tech you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: solid. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely tough and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. outdoor recreation is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad.

I've been living here for 3 years and I'd say it's exactly what I was looking for. The nightlife is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Feel free to reach out with questions..

I'm a marketing manager and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. The community is average and there's always something going on.
