First post here. Military spouse here. Median household income is $27,741, which feels on the lower side for the area. Crime rate is something to consider -Roma sits at 208.2 per 100K. Poverty rate is 30.2%, which is higher than I expected. The suburbs are where most families end up. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's been a really good experience overall. Internet is challenging in most areas.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely hit or miss and I've found it's exactly what I was looking for. My neighborhood (The Heights) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a project manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 8 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good schools in most areas
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited high-paying job options
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are growing, gas is tough.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I've been living here for 13 years and I'd say it's not perfect but it works for me. The safety is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.
