Just moved to Rome, any tips?

Hey folks, Military spouse here. Median household income is $51,106, which feels on the lower side for the area. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Any advice would be great. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 3 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Pine Hills side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 32, moved here 9 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Pine Hills and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The housing market situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for retirees. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $60K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. weather used to be much wild but now it's average.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Houston about 9 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are affordable, gas is average.

Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is cultural scene. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.
