Considering Rose Hill CDP (Fairfax County) vs St. Louis -help me decide
Been meaning to ask this. Just moved here 10 months ago and You can expect to pay around $2,203 for rent here. It's a a small town city with about 21,484 people. The median home value here is around $657,900, which is pretty steep. Average temperature is around 59--F, so the weather is moderate. Homes are going for about $657,900 on average. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely better than expected and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (East) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Pine Hills. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in hospitality. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Definitely worth checking out..

Came here for weather and stayed because I have mixed feelings honestly. The cost of living is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are excellent, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from New York and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Springfield. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in engineering. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
No regrets on my end..

Hot take but I'm still on the fence after all this time. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

I've lived in Riverside for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I genuinely enjoy living here. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong sense of community
- The job market scene is tough
The downsides:
- Limited shopping options
- Limited entertainment options
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
