I'm a college student here and Poverty rate is 22.0%, which is higher than I expected. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Does this match your experience? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The suburbs are where most families end up. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 3 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Portland it's average.
