Random thought, Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it exceeded my expectations. Definitely worth checking out..

I've lived in Uptown for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I have mixed feelings honestly. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Four distinct seasons
- The cultural scene scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Limited entertainment options
- Far from beaches/mountains
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for singles. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 1-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Nashville it's decent.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a teacher, 35, moved here 11 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in East and Westside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The walkability situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- East: Great for couples. improving vibes, walkable.
- Westside: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$90K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in South. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally average. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The cultural scene is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.
I've been here 14 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
