Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely tough and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a contractor, 49, moved here 1 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Eastside and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Nice parks and green spaces
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally surprisingly good - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The public transit situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Eastside: Great for remote workers. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $70K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**

But if you're coming from Atlanta, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are established, gas is average.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Pros I've experienced:

- Active local events and festivals
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are developing, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I've lived in Lakewood for about 4 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- The job market scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for young professionals. Good luck with whatever you decide..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 13 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is cost of living. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Maple Ridge side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
