Biggest downsides of living in Royal Oak?

Random thought, I'm a remote worker and You can expect to pay around $1,335 for rent here. The median home value here is around $305,900, which seems about average. Average temperature is around 49--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 2.3%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $95,182, which feels pretty solid for the area. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Nice parks and trails
- Good schools
- Lots of new development
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- High property taxes
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Limited cultural events
What would you do? People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 10 years. Moved from Portland for work. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is improving. We bought in 2020 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is average - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are better than expected. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Dating scene is rough. Far from beaches/mountains. And walkability can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 9/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's underrated for what you get.

Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in construction. If you're in marketing you might struggle.

People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 7 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Southern.

Feel free to reach out with questions..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Maple Ridge. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in construction. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Thai.

No regrets on my end..
