Worst things about Sackets Harbor nobody talks about
First post here. We have two kids and Homes are going for about $224,600 on average. The unemployment rate is 1.0%, which is pretty low. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Anyone in a similar situation?

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 5 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The food scene is genuinely excellent and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (North) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Raleigh, be prepared for the culture shock. public transit is completely different here. And Traffic during rush hour is rough.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is outdoor recreation. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Dallas about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Four distinct seasons
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are wild, gas is decent.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Baltimore about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Urban sprawl is real
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are competitive, gas is average.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I'm a chef who relocated here from Phoenix about 3 years ago. The main reasons were family and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Affordable housing options
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are established, gas is excellent.
Socially, I'm still on the fence after all this time. No regrets on my end..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Downtown for 3 years. Moved from Tampa for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth up significantly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.
**Employment:**
finance is strong here. marketing is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are reasonable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I have mixed feelings honestly. The outdoor scene is surprisingly good - we have rivers within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Downtown schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited high-paying job options. Bugs and humidity in summer. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 7/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I genuinely enjoy living here. Compared to LA it's challenging.

Public transit is underrated here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I have mixed feelings honestly.
